Tablet AW-920 8” Quad core mini iPad clone

I bought this tablet of 8 inches, mini iPad clone, with the credits of DealExtreme accumulated for several months. This is one of the cheapest quad core tablets on the market, about $ 100.

The appearance of the device is very good, tricks be an original Apple at first sight. Comes with a screen protector applied to already 8 inches. Very similar to the iPad, not only the home button.

Here is the tablet, only pull the paper at the bottom right to terminate the screen saver application.

Inside the box comes three cables: a microUSB, one for food and one microUSB OTG for connecting modems or other USB devices to the tablet. I thought this was one of the tablets that do not carry the USB, but I was wrong. Loads both the USB and the DC connector.

The tablet is pretty and looks good. At the home button we have the front camera of 0.3 M pixels.

At the top we have the power and volume buttons.

The side finish and metallic looks back. I don't know if it really is made of metal, because there are many plastics with metallic finish that cheat.

On the side we have a HDMI connector for connecting the tablet to a TV, a headphone, a DC input for charging the battery and the microUSB connector which also serves to charge the battery.

On the back the reset and the rear camera 5 m pixels.

The metallic finish is very nice. Unexpected for a tablet so cheap. At the top we have the speaker outputs.

There's the tablet carrying the Android operating system 4.2.2. In DealExtreme said Android was the 4.1, but it came installed with a newer version.

The lock screen is the standard of Android. In this photo I had already passed the Android to Portuguese.

Actually, the tablet comes with a pretty weird launcher called Ylauncher. Appears right away this screen with a lot of things in Chinese. Easy to remove this application and replace by the standard Android Launcher or your favorite.

Speaking of favorite Launcher, mine is the ilauncher, It is currently out of Google Play, but it can be found and downloaded from this alternative address. With the iLauncher the tablet would look like with the apple operating system: nothing more suited to a clone of iPad.

There is the settings menu. There is support for multiple users, not very common in all tablets.

I found the very good battery, about of 4000mAh. Lasts more than one day since the use of the tablet is not continuous with games or WiFi.

In the display settings have the option enable HDMI output and also such “Image Enhancement System”. I left this option disabled because I didn't realize any difference.

Android is the 4.2.2, as previously commented. Not found on the website of the manufacturer any info on new firmware. This seems to be the newest for now.

There are the “jelly beans” Android's Jelly Bean:

The AnTuTu benchmarking score is about 11 thousand points. Bad for a tablet, but for the price I paid. Will run most of the simplest games and even some more complex 3D. Won't run newer and heavy 3D games, logically.

Android runs on a ATM7029 CPU 1.2 GHz Quad-Core with 1 GB of RAM. Very good specifications for the price range.

Below we have hardware information such as the screen resolution of 1024 x 720 and 160DPI, aside from the cameras of 0.3 M and 5 m pixels.

One of the problems I noticed in this tablet is a slowness when loading games or applications. As it comes with Root, installed No Frills CPU Control and changed the way the operating system modify the CPU clock (called CPU Governor). My idea is to keep the clock always tops (just put the governoro in performance). This vastly improved the loading time and the slowness of the tablet.

There are techniques better than this to save battery and improve the performance of Android. However, This firmware is not supported by the other “Governors” that would make it, as Fantasys or Smartass. Maybe next update?

A problem of this tablet is that the screen, only 160DPI, leaves something to be desired not only in the resolution but also in their colors a little pale. Also, for only 100 dollars can't wait nothing much better.

See how the red and white as lacking a little blue. I tried to download software to adjust but it has not been possible to.

Google Play works very well. At least all that I tried to install it worked.

Below the screen “loading” the game Angry Birds. In this tablet time to load games and apps is a bit too high, but after I loaded everything works pretty fast.

The facebook application works very well, which shows that the problem of loading and the slowness of the operating system firmware features, hardware not.

Both the front camera like the back are bad, What was to be expected on a tablet or mobile phone at low cost. You could take a good picture if the lighting is good, but there is no auto-focus or flash.

This is a tablet that could certainly benefit greatly with a better firmware, maybe even an older android as the 4.1 or 4.2.1. I tried to find new firmwares on manufacturer's page and in other forums on the internet, but I did not succeed.

Overall it is a good device for the price. Has quad core CPU and screen 8 inches for a price less than the single core tablets with 7 inch sold here in Brazil. The screen, the firmware and the cameras are the main defects, but the cost and the appearance of the device certainly pays off. It is worth remembering that the single core tablets sold in Brazil by 300 to 500 real must also have the same defects, or be even worse.
