My students laugh when I say that I have no antivirus installed on any of my machines. I'm not even! If you do not lower things unknown locations and be careful where you're going, no need of this shit. A long time ago I stopped using them, leave the absurdly slow computer.
But an application I always have in my machine, is the HijackThis. This is not an antivirus, but a file parser that run on your computer, as well as registry keys. In just a few seconds you find out if there's something wrong by turning on your PC.
The interface is the same since before 2000. You must click “SCAN”.
Then just wait a few seconds and a list of programs and registry keys will appear.
You can save this list to a text file on your computer.
Then simply paste the contents of this file in analysis sites on internet to see if there's something strange running on your computer.
If the running is marked as “SAFE” or “VERY SAFE” so that means it is not a malicious program or problematic. The community discusses and mark the files and registry keys as safe or unsafe. A great idea!
Have entries that are marked as “NASTY” or “VERY NASTY” must be investigated. In the worst case you can delete the file indicated. If you do not have delete, Download an anti-virus, remove the virus and then uninstall the anti-virus. This file “MOBOGENIE” marked in the figure below I don't lembava you have installed, but I checked on the internet and is not virus!
You also discover things that are running and you have no more interest. For example, I installed the Spybot on the computer and forgot to remove after use.
A great tool for all PCs that run Windows. I use this program and the ComboFix when ever I think the computer is responding so weird. Anti-virus, no way!
